5,197
"How do we measure loss?"
Battlestar Galactica has grappled with the Iraq War, the occupation by a vastly superior force, Insurgency, and detention without due process, and tonight, with whether the acting President of the remainder of the Human Race is not only personally responsible for the deaths of those he misled, but if he even deserves the right to a fair trial for his War Crimes.
During that trial, the prosecution points out the exact number of Colonists that died on his watch. In doing so, they may have actually given us the milestone, benchmark, call it what you will, when George W. Bush should be given a fair trial - when the 5,197th American soldier dies after the horrors of the failed surge, and it's follow-on tactic suggested by Karl Rove's favorite computer program; Politically Inevitable Social Seque: OFFICIAL, or PISSOFF.
5,197. A number to remember no matter what those who refuse to tell grieving Parents, Spouses, and Children, that their loss was in vain, choose to distract us with next.
It's worked for four years, but not a day after the death of Soldier 5,197.
5,197.

May seem obvious, but... production companies already have quite a bit of power. I really don't want to think what will happen if we, as Americans, "authenticate" a sci-fi show by waiting for some writer's benchmark to come about.
5,197 is a pretty low number, as far as was are concerned. And I know the current regime of politicians will argue that case... Perhaps we need to pick a lower number and actually take action on it. I, personally, call for the next casualty to be to the "one too many". We have the power and, moreover, the authority to impeach this President today?
The questions I want to ask are:
Why haven't we?
When will we?
What, in the end, will be the cause?
Gotta love typos...
Should have read:
a pretty low number, as far as wars are concerned
As Jack Sparrow might say: "Artist!"
BSG is more authentic than any hour of Hannity, Cavuto, Hume, Kristol, or Kondracke.
Calling for immediate impeachment just plays into their hands as they follow the PISSOFF daily brief. America is in the grip of Contentia Nervosa and even the best of arguments is doomed to disappear into the worst of debates.
Throwing out a challenge far enough into the future that those challenged certainly have time to meet it, is quite different. Like a movie trailer, it puts a vision in your head in plenty of time to have you lining up at the theater when the film finally comes out. In this case, if you can get past the crowd chanting "5197. GO TO WAR, OR GO TO HEAVEN!"
Iraq is not a War, it's only called that by those who know it's a mistake that they can't own up to. The first soldier to die there was too many. George W. Bush would not accept a 5,197 cap on casualties. He would claim it only "helps the enemy" and no one is going to "tie his hands" when it comes to the sacrificing of those he commands, but 5197 would insure that EVERY DAY that number came closer, would be one linked in the minds of the audience as the day he must go if he hasn't "succeeded" by then.

Good point.
I guess my aversion is one I always have when people want to draw comparisons between financial motivated fantasy capitalizing on demographic opinion, and reality. I would still be inclined to pick another number, just to avoid that comparison...
Hang on America. If PUBMASTER and I can't have this conversation, who can?
I have worked on a major Motion Picture that could have been called a financial motivated fantasy capitalizing on demographic opinion, so I know the reality of which I speak. I've been in meetings where the suits proclaimed "But Shatner needs more close-ups", when we where trying to have Spock disappear so the officers could mutiny, seperate the Saucer, and begin the Search For Spock. What we got were more jiggly reaction shots; one after the other, of EVERYONE on the bridge, so that they got equal time, while the concepts that it took the next three films to get around to were getting away.
Panicking, and reaching back to Khan in reaction to a film that re-designed Starfleet, and just about everything in TMP, is "capitalizing on demographic opinion".
Taking until Star Trek IV, to get around to everything that could have been in the first film, may have finally found its parallel in the first four years of the occupation of Iraq.
Maybe both are just good business in the end.
One of those who tricked out NCC-1701A however, appears to be at the heart of BSG. There is no need to make excuses for "JOVAN in Space", because what was begun over twenty years ago has now been perfected, and the artistic integrity and power of the creative effort and all who are responsible for it, can now be seen and appreciated immediately even if understanding comes later.
Our ENTERPRISE recently sold for $240,000 before Andy's went for $500,000
A movie is coming that will blow all those who complained about a $40 million budget away.
Let's just hope it's not titled "The 5,197".

Never give up. Never surrender.

"If I quit now, they win."
One thing Mulder AND Scully agreed on. Perhaps the most important line in the movie that showed how to actually take out a Federal Building, and maybe even why. Unfortunately, Maya gets the last word as there are those out there that are proud of the fact that they've "never seen the X-Files".
Do "They" still win, if their opponent doesn't know he's playing?
I'll leave you with another quote. One I finished before the actor did.
"Sir, the impossible scenario we never planned for? Well..."

While I'm at it - and I mean from almost 3 years in the future - I've just linked to this post (The Other 23) and in doing so, have re-read 5,197 and all the comments only to ask why Chris Carter and Aaron Sorkin still haven't co-written and created the definitive DISCLOSURE movie? Could it be because of fear it wouldn't be a "financial motivated fantasy capitalizing on demographic opinion", and if so, is that because FOX NEWS has bought the rights to demographic opinion as they continue to tell us what Reality is?
Maybe that is the "impossible scenario" Hollywood never thought of much less planned for.
Maybe not. Maybe Carter/Sorkin are already talking to Eick and the BSG/Caprica crews.
Well?
